The HIV rate map, and the countries it cannot colour
UNAIDS adult prevalence, ages 15-49, mapped for 145 countries. 24 of the 110 markets this site prices have no estimate at all.
Bands are log-spaced because published prevalence runs 0.1% to 23.4%: on a linear ramp every country outside eastern and southern Africa lands in one pale band. Grey is no UNAIDS estimate, which is not the same as a low one.
What the chart says
- Prevalence is a stock, not a transmission rate. South Africa reads 17.2% with 81% of patients on treatment. The Philippines reads 0.3% with 40% on treatment and new infections still climbing. The lower number is the less settled one.
- Grey is not zero. UNAIDS models 145 countries. The USA, Japan, South Korea, Poland, Russia, China and Turkey are not among them, so 24 of the 110 markets on this site carry no estimate in either direction.
All 169
Every country UNAIDS models, ascending by prevalence, plus the markets we price that it does not model.

Ages 15-49 and modelled, not this site's 20-39 band. UNAIDS publishes "<0.1" as 0.1, so 38 countries tie at the floor; ties break on new infections, never on an invented decimal. 83 of 145 countries sit at or under 0.5%.
Where this is wrong
- Modelled, not measured. These are UNAIDS Spectrum estimates with published uncertainty ranges, not case counts. Treat one decimal place as the limit of what they support.
- The missing countries are a reporting boundary, not a safety rating. The same blank holds low-burden states with their own surveillance and countries with real epidemics that do not report this way. We do not fill it from national notification rates: new diagnoses per 100k measures testing effort as much as infection, and stacking it under this column would put two different measurements under one label.
- Country level, and prevalence is national. Transmission concentrates by city, network and population group, so a national figure describes neither a city nor an individual encounter.

WHO Global Health Observatory, republishing UNAIDS estimates: MDG_0000000029 (adult prevalence 15-49), SDGHIV (new infections per 1,000 uninfected, by sex), HIV_ARTCOVERAGE (antiretroviral coverage). Built by geomax/build_hiv.py.
Prevalence, new infections and treatment coverage are sortable next to sex ratio, cost and safety on the research desk.
