Every market's census source, the finest unit its statistics office publishes age×sex for, and how many of those units we carry. The level name differs by country and is not comparable across them — a Polish gmina is not a US county.

How our numbers are defined and computed
Most figures on this site are sourced — a census count, a survey index, a government rule — and the table above says where each one comes from. The ones below are different: we compute them, or in a few cases we set them by hand. Below is the exact formula and definition for each metric.
Counting people & Sex ratio metrics
Male to Female Ratio Free #
Definition: The number of men per 100 women in the selected age band (fixed at 20–39 on public rankings; customizable on the research desk). Directly derived from local census counts.
Male to Female Ratio = (Men in Age Band / Women in Age Band) × 100
Interpretation:
- < 100: Women outnumber men (e.g., 95.0 means 95 men for every 100 women, or 105.3 women per 100 men).
- 100.0: Parity (equal numbers of men and women).
- > 100: Men outnumber women (e.g., 105.0 means 105 men for every 100 women).
Overall female ratio Free #
Definition: Total nationwide women per 100 men across all age groups combined (ages 0 to 100+). Provides macro demographic context for a country's overall gender balance and female longevity.
Overall Female Ratio = (Total National Female Population / Total National Male Population) × 100
Interpretation: Country-level baseline. Sourced from official UN Population Division & national statistics office annual series.
Young women ratio (20–35) Free #
Definition: Number of women per 100 men specifically in the core young-adult age bracket (ages 20–35). Pinned as a stable reference that does not move with user slider settings.
Young Women Ratio (20–35) = (Women Aged 20–35 / Men Aged 20–35) × 100
Interpretation: Inverted so higher values mean more young women relative to men.

Net difference between women and men in the selected age band, from local census counts.

Definition: The absolute count of women minus men in the selected age band (Surplus women), and that same net difference expressed as a percentage of the total age-band population (Surplus women %).
Surplus Women (Headcount) = Women in Band − Men in BandSurplus Women % = ((Women in Band − Men in Band) / (Women in Band + Men in Band)) × 100
Worked example: A district with 52,000 women and 48,000 men aged 20–39 has Surplus Women of +4,000 and a Surplus Women % of +4.0% (4,000 / 100,000 × 100). If men outnumber women, the figures are negative.
